About this place
Opening its doors from 7:00 in the morning, Daimatsu is an old-school canteen serving hearty home-style cooking in an unhurried atmosphere. A longstanding morning favourite is the breakfast set, a generous tray laden with a fried egg, fermented soybeans (natto), potato salad, shredded cabbage, deeply flavoured miso soup loaded with ingredients, and house pickles. Paired with steaming, well-made dashi and a generous bowl of white rice, it provides a deeply reassuring start to the day.
Come lunchtime, the menu unfolds into a broad array of honest set meals and rice bowls. The yakiniku set, cooked to order, features pork loin coated in a punchy ginger-soy sauce that calls for mouthful after mouthful of tender rice. Crisp lightly pickled vegetables and a simple miso soup dotted with fried tofu complete the meal with the nostalgic charm typical of a traditional neighbourhood eatery. Those with a healthy appetite often turn to the katsudon or omurice, while anyone keen to sample varied side dishes can opt for an assorted bento box or the daily lunch set.
The dining room is equally welcoming for an early afternoon drink, where diners order set-meal side dishes à la carte alongside a cold bottled beer or Hoppy. Solo customers can settle in comfortably without hesitation. Payment is strictly cash only, so it is wise to arrive with coins or small bills in hand.
